Microsoft Windows for Pens to be Offered with NCR’s 3125 Notepad Machine

June 24, 1991 — Microsoft Corp. and NCR Corp. Monday announced that NCR will offer Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing on its new pen-based notepad, the NCR 3125.

Microsoft also announced the availability of the second beta release of the Microsoft Windows for Pens Software Development Kit (SDK).

”NCR believes that the 3125 combined with Windows for Pens will catalyze the rapid adoption of pen computers in a broad range of markets, allowing customers and developers to create exciting new applications or leverage existing applications, development tools, training and experience,” said Alok Mohan, vice president of NCR’s workstation products division.

”NCR today has shown tremendous leadership in creating a powerful, highly portable platform for the pen that meets critical needs of new and existing users,” said Jeff Raikes, vice president of office systems at Microsoft.

Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing is a graphical operating system that will allow new, as well as existing applications complete flexibility in exploiting the pen. Windows for Pens will also make available to users of the more than 1,200 existing retail Windows-based applications the ability to point, tap, drag, gesture and even write.

The NCR 3125 is a pen-based computer notepad designed to provide customers with the benefits of pen computing while supporting the broadest base of industry-standard software.

Microsoft Broadens Delivery of Windows for Pens Beta SDK

Whereas the shipment of the first Windows for Pens SDK beta was restricted to 300 developers, the shipment of the second beta has already arrived at more than 3,000 customer and developer sites, including a broad base of participants in the Microsoft Windows developers beta program.

”Support for Windows for Pens has been dramatic,” said Raikes.  ”Today, more than 100 ISVs announced their formal commitment to build new or enhanced applications to run under Windows for Pens.”

Windows for Pens is expected to ship before the end of 1991.  However, Microsoft and its OEM partners will offer an end-user beta program for selected customers who want to work with Windows for Pens when pen-based machines, such as NCR’s 3125 notepad, are available.
