Fujitsu Ltd. Announces Formation of Fujitsu Personal Systems Inc.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — June 1, 1992 — Fujitsu Ltd., Tokyo, Monday announced the formation of Fujitsu Personal Systems Inc., a Santa Clara-headquartered company responsible for product planning, sales, marketing and systems integration support of personal systems computer products in North America and Europe.

Initially, the products sold by the new company will include the Poqet (pronounced ''pocket'') line of super portable computer products manufactured by Fujitsu.

Fujitsu Personal Systems was created with the purchase of Poqet Computer Corp., a pioneer in portable computing, by Fujitsu Ltd., a $25 billion world leader in computers, telecommunications, semiconductors and related electronic devices.

The company has approximately 150 employees, a worldwide network of marketing, sales and support operations and a suite of innovative products designed to provide mobile workers with access to industry-standard computing resources.

''Fujitsu is committed to being a worldwide leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of personal computer products,'' said Yasunori Kanda, general manager of Fujitsu Ltd.'s $2 billion Personal Systems Group.

''By lending the strength of our corporate name to the strong organization and name recognition of Poqet products, we can grow our business in world markets by allowing each country organization to design solutions that meet customer needs.''

''In creating a new subsidiary to serve the needs of North American and European computer buyers, Fujitsu is extending the business strategy that has made it the second-largest computer company in the world,'' said Dr. Robb Wilmot, chairman of Fujitsu Personal Systems.

''This strategy recognizes that separate corporations are best able to define and deliver products to meet diverse market needs and that these companies are empowered by the ability to call upon the engineering strength and manufacturing resources of the parent company.''

The new company will leverage the patented power management technology used in products sold under the Poqet brand name for systems used in field automation and mobile worker applications, such as data collection, sales force automation, field service and electronic messaging. Current products based on this technology include:

— PoqetPad, the smallest, lightest full-screen pen-based computer available, which provides the functionality of an IBM PC XT in a 1.2-pound device that uses a pen instead of a keyboard or mouse.

— PoqetCom, a 3.3 pound portable computer with integrated radio modem that provides wireless data communications and electronic messaging capabilities to field workers using the ARDIS network.

— The Poqet PC, a 1.2 pound MS-DOS super portable computer with a full 80-character by 25-line display and touch-type keyboard, powered by two AA-size alkaline batteries.

''The partnership between Fujitsu and Poqet has always been strong and our work together has led to a number of exciting products, including Japanese-language super portable computers and the unique PoqetPad pen-based computer,'' said Tadayasu Sugita, president and chief executive officer of Fujitsu Personal Systems.

''With the official launch of Fujitsu Personal Systems, we are now prepared to embark on a major effort to become a worldwide leader in personal systems products.''

Fujitsu Personal Systems will continue to market products through value-added channels, including VARs and systems integrators specializing in vertical market sales. Additionally, a Fujitsu Personal Systems sales force and solutions engineering group will support these channels and work directly with Fortune 1000-class organizations.
