Fujitsu Personal Systems and LXE Join Forces to Develop Wireless LAN Solutions

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — August 28, 1995 — Fujitsu Personal Systems, Inc., the leading provider of highly integrated mobile computing systems for corporate and vertical market field automation applications, and LXE, a manufacturer of wireless data communication systems for manufacturing, distribution and warehousing applications, today announced a strategic partnership to develop high-performance wireless LAN solutions.

As technology partners, LXE will integrate its LAN radio and internal antenna with Fujitsu's Stylistic 500 high-performance tablet computer. The resulting wireless LAN solution, capable of running Windows applications over a high-speed 1.6mbps wireless LAN, will be co-labeled with both the Fujitsu name and "LXE Mobile Ready(TM)" certification, indicating that the system is fully compatible with LXE's wireless network "backbone." LXE will provide customers full network integration services, including facilities analysis, installation, training and support.

"We see tremendous growth in wireless LAN applications, particularly in the healthcare industry, where the automation of burdensome paperwork and other tasks can have significant impact on a provider's bottom line," said Lou Panetta, Fujitsu's executive vice president. "LXE's demonstrated technical expertise in wireless LANs and sophisticated support services will allow us to aggressively target this expanding market."

The new Fujitsu/LXE solution will target a variety of applications, such as healthcare, mobile automation, retail and route accounting. Additional target markets will include on-site inspection and troubleshooting applications for the utilities industry and supervisory functions in warehouse and manufacturing environments.

"Utilizing Fujitsu's stylistic 500 tablet computer, we've created a state-of-the-art platform for wireless LAN applications," said Steve Flemig, LXE's product marketing manager. "The system's unique design allows us to integrate an LXE internal LAN antenna, which will significantly reduce equipment repair and returns. Our relationship with Fujitsu allows us to get ahead of the competition and provide our customers with exciting new solutions."

The Stylistic 500 is a 2.6-pound tablet computer designed for mobile workers involved in high-end decision support activities. Powered by an Intel 486DX2-50 CPU, the system features RAM expandable to 20 MB; two Type I/II/III PCMCIA version 2.0 slots; and an 8-inch transmissive backlit, 64-level VGA screen. It is the only tablet computer to operate on standard Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) batteries, which can be purchased in most consumer retail outlets.
