EXAR Announces Strategic Design Win for 3Com PalmPilot and Pilot Organizers
FREMONT, Calif. — April 13, 1998 — EXAR Corporation (Nasdaq: EXAR) announced today that Palm Computing(R), a 3Com (Nasdaq: COMS) company, has designed EXAR's ST16C650A UART (universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter) communications device in its new Palm Computing 2MB upgrade package that gives users of earlier generation 3Com PalmPilot(TM), Pilot 1000 and Pilot 5000 organizers full Palm III(TM) functionality. Palm Computing's connected organizers provide instant access to critical information, such as calendar items, addresses, e-mail messages and to-do lists.
The ST16C650 was designed in the Palm Computing 2MB upgrade product to convert data from serial to parallel, and parallel to serial formats for information exchange via the system's infrared (IR) data transmission capability. This enables users to share information with other Palm III or upgraded organizers via IR technology.
"Exar is pleased that Palm Computing has chosen one of our leading UARTs as part of its new 2MB upgrade package," said Roubik Gregorian, vice president and general manager of Exar's communications division. "Palm Computing represents another strategic design win for Exar, and validates our strength in supplying solutions for wireless connections."
According to Alan Urban, product manager of Palm Computing, "For the rapidly changing market of handheld organizers, Exar's UART communications device offers the functionality and flexibility we need to offer our customers' IR transmission capabilities. The 16C650A offered both the low current stand-by mode, IR encoder/decoder capability and the small silicon footprint necessary for our application."
Product Details
The ST16C650A, which was introduced in November 1997, is an enhanced UART with 32 Byte FIFOs, automatic hardware/software flow control and data rates up to 1.5 Mbps. The ST16C650A is the forerunner to the recently announced XR16C850 family featuring the industry's first UARTs with on-chip transmit and receive FIFO counters. Both the ST16C650A and XR16C850 are available in 40, 44 and 48 pin TQFP packages.
