K2 Announces Drug-to-Drug Interactions Analyzer for Palm connected organizers

WESTBORO, Mass. — July 28, 1999 — K2 Consultants, Inc., a mobile computing software company, today announced the release of Apothecarium(TM) for Palm(TM) connected organizers. The Apothecarium joins K2's existing popular products Lexidrugs and 5 Minute Clinical Consult, K2's Palm devices solutions for medical professionals.

The Apothecarium contains more than 6200 drug entries to find out the information about interactions between drugs based on the database from First DataBank and Lexi-Comp, Inc. Apothecarium presents a comprehensive source of drug interactions information with a very intuitive user interface. The program provides a well structured information about any given interaction categorized by Significance Level, Mechanism of Action, Clinical Effects, Predisposing factors, Patient Management, Discussion and References. Additionally, the program contains an analysis module to flag all possible interactions in a selected set of drugs.

Apothecarium is based on K2's Advanced Reference Technology (ART(TM)), used in all K2 products for the hand-held computers. K2 established a de facto standard in medical referencing, when it introduced an early release of its ART implementation to Harvard Medical School nearly 6 years ago. It has since developed a series of ART compatible reference products on a variety of hand-held platforms. Thom Zeyl, B Sc, MD, CCFP(C) who is a user of K2's products on the Palm Pilot platform, appreciates the value of ART products. When asked to describe his experience with his Palm, he said, "After twenty years in family medicine in Canada, this product Apothecarium , along with Lexidrugs and 5 Minute Clinical Consult is all I need to carry with me on rounds, on house calls, at my nursing home and in my office. Since I started using these I haven't looked at my reference texts once!."

Endorsements such as these are not new to K2's president, Sandeep Shah. "Apothecarium fits nicely into our strategy of leveraging information for presentation as well as decision support. One of the powerful aspect of ART is 'Content Intelligence' that can be shared between components", he said. "When you use the Apothecarium in concert with other ART products, you notice how well these products integrate with each other." He added, "It is very gratifying to note that the vision of ubiquitous medical computing is turning into reality by our product implementations." K2's software has been acknowledged to have played a role in saving a passenger's life aboard an airplane, and in helping the victims of volcanic eruptions on a remote island of Montserrat.

In developing Apothecarium, K2 has worked closely with its end-users. The result is a very sophisticated system that locates the desired information quickly, and presents the information effectively on the Palm(TM) handheld device displays. In addition, the SmARTlink(TM) feature of ART provides an added benefit of cross-referencing to other K2 products, Lexidrugs/pilot and 5 Minute Clinical Consult/pilot.

The new Apothecarium is available immediately over the Internet from K2 at (http://www.skyscape.com/palm or 1-888-4K2-MEDICAL) or their fulfillment partners such as Palm Gear HQ (http://www.palmgear.com) or PalmCentral (http://www.palmcentral.com), and at K2's independent retail channels.
