Riverbed ScoutSync Selected by Palm Computing as Mobile Enterprise Synchronization and Management Solution

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — October 18, 1999 — Riverbed Technologies of Vienna, Va., today announced that it has entered into an OEM and development agreement with handheld computing industry leader Palm Computing, Inc., a 3Com company (Nasdaq:COMS), in which Palm Computing will use Riverbed's ScoutSync Server as the enabling technology behind the new Palm(TM) HotSync(R) Server. Under the terms of the agreement, the two companies will also work together to develop new technologies that will further enable the large-scale deployment of handheld devices.

Byron Connell, vice president of Marketing for Palm Computing, said, "Palm is committed to delivering on the promise of the mobile enterprise. Leveraging ScoutSync in the Palm HotSync Server allows us to meet market demand quickly with an industry-leading, proven technology. Also, because the ScoutSync product is so flexible, we will be able to extend and integrate the technology with our total enterprise solution set."

The server synchronization technology developed by Riverbed allows mobile workers to use handheld devices to access critical enterprise information and applications, without requiring a connection to a desktop computer. Remote and mobile workers can synchronize data with corporate databases, ERP systems, web applications and legacy systems using any wireless, wired or desktop connection."

This agreement enables Palm to offer this synchronization functionality to customers as part of the Palm HotSync Server to allow mobile professionals to work faster, smarter and with greater accuracy outside the physical boundaries of an office and beyond a traditional computing environment.

The powerful management capabilities of the ScoutSync will also be a core component of the Palm HotSync Server. These management capabilities enable IT managers to identify Palm Computing and other handheld devices throughout their business, administer individual devices or groups of users, and manage and deploy the applications running on mobile devices from a central location — regardless of the location of the user. The management component ensures that today's mobile enterprise solutions can be effectively managed for future growth and success.

"Palm has consistently demonstrated an ability to lead the mobile market with the right products at the right time," said Wayne Jackson, Riverbed president and CEO. "Palm's selection of ScoutSync is a powerful validation of Riverbed's development efforts and technology. We look forward to working with Palm to develop products that make mobile devices a natural, and ubiquitous, extension of the enterprise."

"The lack of direct server synchronization and mobile device management have been missing components for the true deployment of handhelds in the corporate enterprise," said Diana Hwang, research manager, International Data Corp. "As organizations adopt handhelds, these capabilities will become significant components, ensuring users have access to their critical business data from these mobile devices."

Conduits written for the 3.5 release of the Palm HotSync Server or Riverbed's ScoutSync 3.5 will work on the HotSync Server, version 4.0. Riverbed will also provide ScoutSync Platform Extensions that will enable HotSync Server support for Windows CE, Win32 (including Wintel laptops), DOS, and other mobile operating systems.

Riverbed will continue to develop, market and sell all ScoutWare products and will continue to evolve its relationships with industry leaders to ensure continued delivery on the promise of the freedom to go mobile. Riverbed products, including ScoutSync, will remain platform and operating system neutral. Riverbed's ScoutWare mobile software family also includes ScoutArchitect, a visual design studio for rapid development of mobile applications, ScoutIT, a core management console that greatly simplifies the administration of mobile devices, and ScoutWeb, an Internet enabling solution that dynamically adapts all web content for real time viewing on any mobile device using any browser.
