TUCOWS Launches the World’s Largest Collection of Palmtop Software PDACentral.
TORONTO — March 3, 1998 — TUCOWS Interactive Limited has launched a new site dedicated to the world's most popular palmtop software. With sub-sections for Palm Pilot, Windows CE and Newton, PDACentral ( http://www.pdacentral.com ) will be the most comprehensive site of its kind on the Internet.
"This is really four sites in one," explains TUCOWS' founder Scott Swedorski. "We have already enjoyed a terrific response to PilotZone, and are adding Newtonville and CEMonster so that we can provide software to as many platforms as possible. We're very excited about the developments in palmtop and pen-based computing, and hope to assist Internet users in making the most of these tools."
There has been an explosion in growth of software for palmtop and pen-based computers. There are already thousands of shareware and freeware programs available for portable computers. PDACentral will follow the TUCOWS model, sorting and reviewing software to ensure that only the best programs are placed on the site.
"We find that TUCOWS encourages developers to improve their programs in hopes of a better 'Cow' rating," says Swedorski. "Developers often quote their ratings on their sites. We believe that PDACentral ratings will come to be as important to palmtop developers, and will encourage development and refinement in the industry."
Swedorski is optimistic about the future of the Newtonville section of the site, despite Apple's recent announcement that it is terminating development of the popular palmtop. "Newton has been a popular device for quite a while now, and there are a lot of these units still available and in use throughout the industry," he says. "We're still seeing independent development for the Newton and expect that development to continue to grow for some time to come."
