CIC Expands Distribution Channel in Japan for its MacHandwriter Product

August 24, 1993 — (NASDAQ/NMS:CICI) Communication Intelligence Corp. (CIC) Tuesday announced that it has expanded distribution of its MacHandwriter, desktop pen extension product for the Japanese Macintosh computer market.

Apple Japan, formerly CIC’s executive distributor of the MacHandwriter II product, will continue to sell MacHandwrit-er II through its network of authorized dealers, on a non-exclusive basis.

CIC has also signed two additional distributors, Catena and Shimadzu Rika. Catena, one of Japan’s largest Macintosh distributors, also distributes other personal computers and develops and distributes business and educational applications software for the Japanese personal computer market. Shimadzu Rika is a leading personal computer distributor for the Japanese educational market. Both distributors have placed initial orders for the MacHandwriter II product.

These companies’ collective PC market share exceeds 80% of the Japanese personal computer market. And they are now beginning to ship portable pen computers, making pen computing a reality in Japan.”

MacHandwriter II, CIC’s pen-based user interface for the Macintosh personal computer, was introduced in Japan in March, 1993. MacHandwriter II allows direct handwritten input of Japanese characters (kanji, hiragana, katakana), alphanumerics, and symbols into the computer using a tablet and pen. Users are able to communicate with their Macintosh simply and naturally by pointing, writing, and drawing with the pen. MacHandwriter is compatible with any Macintosh application written for KanjiTalk.
