CIC Handwriter Pen Technology Wins “Best of Show” at PenExpo

September 13, 1993 — (NASDAQ/NMS:CICI) Communication Intelligence Corp. (CIC) Monday announced that its multilingual Handwriter Recognition System and Handwriter Dynamic Signature Verification software won Boston University and Pen Magazine’s Best of Show Awards for the second consecutive PenEXPO Conference, earlier this month.

CIC’s Handwriter Recognition System won “Best Handwriting Recognizer” over seven other competing recognizers in the category. CIC’s Handwriter Dynamic Signature Verification swept a field of five as “Best Pen Utility.”

Co-sponsored by Boston University’s Corporate Education Center and Pen Magazine, PenEXPO ’93, in Boston, attracted over 2000 attendees. The PenEXPO Show Awards reflect the votes of PenEXPO attendees.

“While pen computing has not taken off as quickly as many of us expected, the emergence of second-generation pen computers within the marketplace is giving this technology renewed momentum,” said Tom Esperson, manager of portable pen products at NEC Technologies. “Previously, accurate handwriting recognition was a gating factor for many buyers. By combining CIC’s award-winning Handwriter Recognition System, with high-performance components, we believe that the lightweight VersaPad is uniquely positioned to take advantage of the growing pen marketplace.”

Among other CIC licensees, NEC is now bundling CIC’s Handwriter Recognition System software on its new pen computers — the VersaPad in the U.S. and the 98PEN tablet in Japan.
