Clinicom Announces a Powerful New Approach

October 17, 1994 — CliniCom Inc. (NASDAQ/NMS:CLIN), a leading provider of point-of-care clinical information systems and services, today announced the availability of the Coordinated Care Solution and the CliniView PC Microsoft Windows-based, portable terminal.

These significant new products were developed by CliniCom to address many of the quality and cost reduction pressures associated with managed care and further build on CliniCom’s strategy to offer one clinical information system capable of managing patient care information from all areas of an integrated healthcare system.

CliniCom has designed its Coordinated Care Solution to allow healthcare providers to develop their own clinical guidelines and objectively measure performance and resource usage against those guidelines for both inpatient and out-patient care environments.

Coordinated Care integrates with installed order communications systems, such as CliniCom’s Clinical Communications, so that all orders for a patient are part of a plan of care and can be assessed with any variances from the plan, as well as expected outcome.
Time is saved, and accuracy and objectivity of information is increased because data is captured automatically as care is occurring, eliminating the need for after-the-fact analysis which is often highly subjective.

Providence Portland Medical Center (Providence), a 483-bed facility in Portland, Ore., served as one of four development partners for Coordinated Care. According to Joan Chan, assistant director of nursing at Providence, “Coordinated Care is vital to our institution because it allows us to better manage the quality and cost of our care delivery process.

“Therefore, we are able to operate in a regulated environment, yet still be competitive in the community. We are realizing many benefits from the multi-disciplinary aspect of CliniCom’s approach. Time and cost savings, reduced redundancy and enhanced clinical decision making, are all increased because clinicians are now able to look at an individual patient’s plan of care, versus having to consult multiple department plans.”

The new CliniView PC point-of-care terminal is the result of an industry partnership between CliniCom and Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., a premier provider of portable technology. CliniCom has expanded on Toshiba’s use of the industry-standard Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing technology and high performance data transmission capabilities by integrating the device with CliniCom’s proven radio frequency-based Wireless Interactive Network (WIN) and medication barcoding technology.

North Colorado Medical Center (NCMC) in Greeley, Colo., served as the initial implementation site for the CliniView PC. “We were extremely impressed with the ease of the recent go-live, especially considering that we are the first healthcare provider to implement the CliniView PC,” said Julianne Fritz, NCMC’s manager of oncology services.

“The devices have been very well received by our clinical staff. They are especially happy with the pen palette and graphical representation of information because it makes charting and reviewing information easier and quicker.”
