Palm Computing Delivers Graffiti Power Writing Technology for Magic Cap Personal Intelligent Communicators

January 24, 1995 — Palm Computing Tuesday announced the immediate availability of Graffiti power writing technology for Magic Cap-based personal intelligent communicators.

Graffiti is a new method of entering text into handheld computers and communications products with a pen. Graffiti represents a major advance in text entry by delivering instant and accurate recognition.

Graffiti works with a simplified version of the existing alphabet. The user enters pre-defined strokes for each letter, Graffiti then translates each stroke into the corresponding text character on the computer screen.

Testing has revealed that users can learn to enter these strokes fast enough to achieve more than 30 words per minute with virtually 100% accuracy. Because Graffiti utilizes the existing alphabet with only a few minor modifications, most users become competent with Graffiti in less than 20 minutes.

Graffiti supports all major pen-based computing platforms including General Magic’s Magic Cap, Apple’s Newton, GEOS from Geoworks, Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing and PenRight!. In four months Graffiti has become the number one selling add-on application for the Apple Newton MessagePads.

“We sell Graffiti one for one with Newtons. I wouldn’t let a Newton buyer go out the door without it,” said Larry Reich, product manager for Apple products at J & R ComputerWorld, a Graffiti reseller. “I expect we will take the same approach with all the Magic Cap Communicators we sell.
