Photonics Demonstrates its Wireless Infrared Technology with GO Corporation’s PenPoint Operating System

April 16, 1992 — Photonics Corp. Thursday demonstrated its Infrared Transceiver for wireless connectivity with GO Corp.’s PenPoint operating system for pen computers.

The Infrared Transceiver provides instant wireless LAN connections for portable notebook, laptop and pen computers. PenPoint is the award-winning 32-bit object-oriented system designed for the mobile computing market and adopted by such computer companies as IBM, NCR, GRiD and Samsung.

“Photonics is committed to working with key players in the portable computing market to deliver state-of-the-art wire-less connectivity solutions to the end-user,” said Gary Hughes, Photonics’ president. “Our relationship with GO is a good example of our efforts in this direction.”

“PenPoint, together with the Photonics technology, demonstrates the power of wireless networking and the ease of use that PenPoint provides, even in complex networking applications,” said Jerry Kaplan, chairman and co-founder, GO Corp.

Photonics’ technology is based on diffuse infrared transmission. As a result, computers and other devices implement-ing the technology need not be aimed — the light is reflected from ceilings, walls and floors, making it difficult to block.

The Transceiver sends data over infrared light at speeds of up to 1 megabit per second, and operates utilizing industry-standard LAN protocols. Designed for battery operated environments, the Infrared Transceiver has a small form factor and consumes very little power.

Photonics is developing a family of OEM and end-user mobile computing products including the PC Add-in card and external tethered transceiver for IBM PC and PC compatible desktop computers, and external adapter for Apple computers, a parallel port adapter for notebook computers, access points which provide access to existing wired networks and repeaters which extend transceiver operating range. In March, Photonics announced a joint technology development agreement with the German company TA Triumph-Adler AG, part of the Olivetti group.

Photonics Corp., located in Campbell, Calif., is the leading developer of infrared wireless connectivity for mobile computing. Photonics was founded in 1985 to develop OEM and end-user mobile computing products. Its major investors include Alpha Partners, Apple Computer Inc., Cornerstone Ventures, Crosspoint Venture Partners and Venrock Associates.
GO Corp., a privately held company headquartered in Foster City, Calif., develops, markets and supports PenPoint, a pen operating system, and applications designed for mobile users, worldwide.
