Apple Japan to Ship CIC’s MacHandwriter II
November 2, 1992 — Communication Intelligence Corp. (NASDAQ:CICI) (CIC) Monday announced that Apple Japan Inc. will begin selling the MacHandwriter II, in December 1992, through its authorized dealers.
President of Apple Japan Inc., Shigechika Takeuchi, announced in October that CIC’s MacHandwriter has been enhanced and upgraded to MacHandwriter II, making it compatible with Apple’s KanjiTalk 7 Release 7.1. CIC will make a detailed presentation of the MacHandwriter II to Apple Japan’s authorized dealers, in Tokyo, on Nov. 4.
MacHandwriter II combined with the Macintosh personal computer and Apple’s new KanjiTalk 7 operating system makes a powerful desktop pen computing system. Simply by connecting the MacHandwriter II tablet to a Macintosh (via the Apple Desktop Bus), Japanese characters (kanji, hiragana, katakana), alphanumerics, and symbols are written directly and naturally into the computer using a tablet and pen. MacHandwriter II runs all kinds of Macintosh applications — from word processors and spread sheets, to desktop publishing and graphics software packages.
“The MacHandwriter II consists of improved handwriting recognition and graphical input capabilities, plus a new user interface for desktop pen computing,” said James Dao, CIC president and chief executive officer. “The MacHandwriter II incorporates the feedback of over 800 corporate users of the MacHandwriter I. We believe this product will be a great contribution to the Macintosh business and, most profoundly, its users in Japan.”
The upgraded MacHandwriter II product has a number of new features that enhances its pen user interface — particularly, on-screen inking referred to as the “Writing Window.” The Writing Window enables the user to immediately see on the screen what he/she is actually writing without looking away or down from the screen. The Writing Window also features a “key ribbon” which allows editing and other Macintosh operations, including a numeric keypad, on screen.
In addition, MacHandwriter II provides an integrated input area, pop-up candidate window (this feature offers users the display and choice of other characters or “candidates” with similar stroke patterns to those just written), gestures, larger graphics area (the entire active area of the tablet), and the ability to choose between absolute or relative cursor modes.
MacHandwriter II can be used on most available Macintosh hardware platforms, including: the Macintosh II, Power-book and Quadra families; the SE/30, LC and LCII.
MacHandwriter II has a lower price point of 78,000 yen. The MacHandwriter II upgrade kit will be sent to all registered users of MacHandwriter I. Technical support for MacHandwriter II will be provided by CIC Japan.
MacHandwriter II was developed by CIC and productized in conjunction with Apple Pacific, both headquartered in California. MacHandwriter II is exclusively distributed in Japan by Apple Japan Inc., located in Shibuya-ku, Tokyo.
CIC is a leading, worldwide supplier of pen computing products, including: multilingual (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Japanese) Handwriter Recognition Systems and Handwriter Dynamic Signature Verification, with interfaces for Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing, GO’s PenPoint and CIC’s own PenDOS and MacHandwriter pen operating environments.
