CIC Handwriter Recognition System software Bundled with new NEC VersaPad
July 19, 1993 — Communication Intelligence Corp. (CIC) (NASDAQ/NMS:CICI) Monday announced that its PenDOS pen operating environment software is offered on the VersaPad — NEC’s new, versatile, high-performance, lightweight pen-tablet.
The VersaPad bundles CIC’s Handwriter Recognition System software with both CIC’s PenDOS and Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing.
Originally introduced as the UltraLite Autograph, NEC’s VersaPad, with pricing starting at $2,999, has been enhanced with increased hard disk storage, user-expandable RAM, and CIC’s award-winning Handwriter Recognition System software. Available for U.S. and U.K. English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Japanese languages, the Hand-writer software recognizes handwritten input on pen-based computers. Offering a more natural input style especially well suited for portable computing, Handwriter allows users to readily interact with the VersaPad pen-tablet.
“Reliable handwriting recognition as well as high performance and competitively priced hardware are critical to the growth of the pen computing market,” said Bob Levin, director of portable marketing at NEC Technologies.
“NEC is responding to market demand by offering the VersaPad — a lightweight, superior price/performing tablet that provides corporate users with sophisticated functionality in an ultra-portable form factor. Early feedback from our customers is very positive regarding CIC’s Handwriter software on both the Pen Windows and PenDOS platforms.”
CIC’s PenDOS pen operating environment is specifically designed to transform major existing mouse-aware DOS applications into pen-aware applications, without modification, as well as to facilitate the development of new pencentric applications.
PenDOS, which provides an easy-to-use pen user interface, including electronic ink, a pen-based cursor, standard and user-definable pen stroke commands, and a pop-up writing window, is implemented on the NEC VersaPad which sup-ports a DOS operating environment.
PenDOS is localized for the languages of the major world markets including U.S., Western Europe and Japan. Combined with Handwriter Recognition System software from Communication Intelligence Corp. (CIC), PenDOS allows NEC Technologies to offer its customers a pen computing solution, worldwide.
