Fujitsu Bundles CIC’s Handwriter Recognizer with Pen Windows and PenDOS on its 325Point Pen Tablet

August 30, 1993 — Fujitsu Personal Systems Inc., a leading provider of highly integrated systems for mobile computing applications, Monday announced that its 325Point pen tablet now supports (NASDAQ:CICI) Communication Intelligence Corp.’s (CIC) Handwriter Recognition System (HRS) software on both CIC’s PenDOS pen operating system and Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing.

The Fujitsu 325Point is designed for mobile workers involved in decision support activities in a wide range of vertical markets, including consumer packaged goods, utilities, pharmaceuticals, transportation and healthcare.

Weighing three pounds, the Fujitsu/CIC pen system is lightweight and easy to use, and incorporates CIC’s award winning HRS software. Available for U.S. and U.K. English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Japanese languages, the HRS software recognizes handwritten input on pen-based computers, and offers a more natural input style that is especially well suited for portable computing.

“Fujitsu’s alliance with CIC enables us to provide complete integrated solutions for the mobile computing industry,” said Lou Panetta, Fujitsu’s executive vice president. “By integrating CIC’s Handwriter recognition software, we can meet the demands of mobile workers, providing them with field automation systems which are better suited to their market needs.”

“The more natural input style of handwriting as a means of computer input, as well as handwriting recognition’s in-creasing reliability and performance on smaller computer form factors, are paramount to the growing pen computing market,” said James Dao, president and chief executive officer of CIC. “Working with Fujitsu will help us to reach our goal of providing the highest standards of recognition across all pen platforms.”

CIC’s PenDOS pen operating environment is specifically designed to transform major existing mouse-aware DOS applications into pen-aware applications, without modification, as well as to facilitate the development of new pen applications. PenDOS provides an easy-to-use pen user interface, including electronic ink, a pen-based cursor, standard and user-definable pen stroke commands, and a pop-up writing window.
