April 13, 1993 — Communication Intelligence Corp. (CIC) (NASDAQ:CICI) Tuesday announced the signing of a joint development agreement with IBM to develop a version of CIC’s award-winning, multilingual Handwriter Recognition System (HRS) software on the OS/2 PEN operating system extension from IBM’s Personal Software Products Division.
To date, the IBM Personal Software Products Division has distributed and exclusively sublicensed CIC’s PenDOS and Handwriter Recognition System for PenDOS to other pen hardware manufacturers worldwide. Additionally, the IBM Personal Computing Co. recently announced the availability of CIC’s HRS and PenDOS pen operating environment on IBM’s newly announced ThinkPad 710T pen-based tablet computer.
“I am pleased about this joint development agreement,” said James Dao, president and chief executive officer of CIC. “Handwriter Recognition System for OS/2 will bring robust desktop pen computing to IBM’s customers and complement CIC’s PenDOS, the pen operating environment for mobile computing with notepads and palm-sized personal digital assistants (PDAs).”
“Pen computing is now coming of age,” according to Dao, “with mature handwriting recognition available on every-thing from desktop multimedia workstations to the small, handheld personal computer with communications capabilities. With this combination, CIC’s Handwriter Recognition System on OS/2 and PenDOS, IBM is creating the pen computing industry standard of excellence.”
CIC’s consumer-proven Handwriter Recognition System software is designed for many different users with a broad range of handwriting styles, and is now available in English (US and UK), German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Japanese languages.
HRS currently ships to the IBM Personal Software Products Division as well as to original CIC licensees, including: Fujitsu Ltd., NEC Corp., NCR Corp., Samsung, Acer Inc., Seiko Epson, and others. HRS for Windows for Pen Computing is available through CIC to large end-user accounts and hardware manufacturers.
