Kurta Introduces New High-Performance Video Tablet System for Pen-Based Systems

August 25, 1993 — Kurta Corp., the industry leader in the design and production of sophisticated pen-based systems components, announced the introduction of the new VTS-5 Video Tablet System, a high-performance pen input peripheral designed to provide creative, user-oriented solutions for pen-based computer applications.

Designed to be held and used in portrait or landscape orientation, the VTS-5’s ergonomic display tablet element is a slim electronic writing tablet about the size of a three-ring binder and slightly more than half an inch in thickness. This complete pen input system attaches to existing desktop computers to give the user full pen-based input and control facilities.

It includes a cordless pen, high-quality LCD, textured glass writing surface and the Kurta VTS-5 VGA controller card for connection to desktop ISA or EISA computers. It offers unparalleled performance and accuracy for advanced pen-based system applications.

“The VTS-5 Video Tablet System is another example of Kurta’s leadership in the field of cordless electromagnetic pen system technology,” said Michael DeVita, general manager of Kurta’s Pen-Based Division. “The VTS-5 is sleek and attractive, with features that make it one of the most powerful and versatile pen input/output systems you can buy.”

Those features include the Kurta cordless Lite-Touch Pens with high-dynamic resolution and accuracy, high pen slew speeds, pen-operated display controls and a host interface cable. The VTS-5 includes a suite of software programs for implementing the system in several different operating environments. These programs operate in the host computer and interface directly to the display tablet element’s pen system controller.

The display tablet element employs an integrated sensor grid/pen system controller assembly connected to a high-performance LCD. The Kurta KPS4 pen system controller uses the company’s advanced pen signal receiver and pen system controller processor components. A single, slender 25-pin cable connects the display tablet element to the system’s add-in VGA controller card in the host computer.

The card provides simultaneous LCD and CRT monitor support in ISA or EISA computers, and also provides a built-in input serial port specifically for the pen system.

The VGA controller’s interface design enhances the performance of pen applications in the PenDOS, Windows for Pen Computing and PenPoint operating environments. Available with the VTS-4 is a pen driver for Windows for Pen Computing, and a configuration file to operate PenPoint easily.

Kurta will be displaying the new VTS-5 Video Tablet System along with its new mixed-mode ASIC for pen-based applications at the PenExpo at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, Aug. 31 – Sept. 3. James L. Rodgers, Kurta’s vice president of research and development, and chief designer of the new pen system, will be speaking at the conference on system integration on Sept. 1 at 2 p.m.
