SEIKO EPSON Licenses CIC Pen Computing Technology Worldwide

December 16, 1992 — (NASDAQ:CICI) Communication Intelligence Corp. (CIC) announces that Seiko Epson Corp. of Japan has signed a worldwide license agreement and will begin to use and distribute CIC’s multilingual Handwriter Recognition System and Handwriter Dynamic Signature Verification software; PenDOS pen operating environment; and other related open-architected, pen computing software technology from CIC.

With total sales in 1991 of $3.5 billion, Seiko Epson is a leader in the development, manufacturing and distribution of printers, computers, watches, semiconductors and a wide range of electronic devices worldwide. In signing this agreement, Seiko Epson joins the growing list of CIC’s licensees and distributors, including IBM, NEC Corp., NCR Corp., SAMSUNG, ACER Inc., and APPLE COMPUTER.

Japan is the second largest computer market in the world. However, because of the difficulty of keyboard usage with the Japanese language, PC usage per capita in Japan is only a fraction of that in the United States and Europe. Pen computing solves this keyboard phobic problem. As a result, the Japanese PC market is poised for explosive growth.

“Seiko Epson’s licensing of CIC’s multilingual Handwriter Recognition System and PenDOS pen operating environment further establishes our technology as the foremost pen computing industry standard,” said James Dao, CIC president and chief executive officer.

“With the addition of Seiko Epson, CIC licensees and marketing allies collectively represent a greater than 40 percent share of the worldwide personal computer market, and approximately 80 percent in Japan.”

CIC is a leading, worldwide supplier of pen computing products, including: multilingual (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Japanese) Handwriter Recognition System and Handwriter Dynamic Signature Verification soft-ware, with interfaces for Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing, GO’s PenPoint, and CIC’s own PenDOS and Ma-cHandwriter pen operating environments.
CIC’s MacHandwriter, a desktop pen extension to the Macintosh computer, is distributed by Apple Japan Inc. CIC is headquartered in Redwood Shores and has a subsidiary in Tokyo.
