Slate Announces the Day-Timer Pen Scheduler Software; Combines the Ease of Paper Planner with Power of Pen Computer
Feb. 19, 1992 — Slate Corp. Tuesday announced the Day-Timer Pen Scheduler software, the only software organizer that is portable, adaptable to individual work styles, and can be learned in 10 minutes or less.
Slate developed the Day-Timer Pen Scheduler software in conjunction with Day-Timers Inc., the largest manufacturer of business-oriented planners and diaries.
Day-Timer Pen Scheduler software is a natural extension of the famous organization system. It includes the four familiar tools of personal productivity: a multiple view calendar, a to-do list, an address book and a notepad.
”The Day-Timer Pen Scheduler software is a revolutionary product that is the result of a strategic partnership between leaders in two very different industries,” said Vern Raburn, chairman of Slate. ”Slate is the leader of pencentric applications. We understand pen computing.
”Day-Timers is the leader in personal planning, with more than 40 years of experience. With Day-Timer’s assistance we’ve developed a product that offers users increased productivity by combining the familiar with the power of the computer.”
The Day-Timer Pen Scheduler software uses electronic ”ink,” the datatype unique to pen computers that enables users to write directly on the screen of a pen computer. With ink, communication between the user and the pen computer mirrors the actions of simple pen and paper. Users can move, copy, delete, sort and magnify this ink information with a few pen gestures.
Through Slate’s pencentric approach to pen-based applications, users are not restricted by pre-set forms, fields or databases, so they can adapt the scheduler to fit their own work style. And with ”on-the-fly indexing” they can select part of any page, attach an index category to it, and later search for it in a matter of seconds.
Slate’s exclusive Tiny Text feature lets users preserve extra information, like agendas, maps, or confidential information, on-screen in very small text. Users can enlarge this data whenever necessary.
With the Day-Timer Pen Schedule software, users work in a free-form manner to keep personal information organized and accessible.
The Day-Timer Pen Scheduler software provides the basis for users to organize themselves in their own style. Each section offers a variety of ways to organize. The Day-Timer Pen Scheduler software’s calendar provides yearly views for long-range planning, monthly and weekly views for working with blocks of time, and daily view for day-to-day appointments.
The Day-Timer Pen Scheduler software’s notepad is a dynamic, electronic pad that can be used to take down notes, sketches, diagrams or doodles. Ink is accepted exactly as it is drawn on screen, so users can underline, scribble or annotate as they choose. Users can choose from a mix of ”paper” backgrounds; such as blank, grid, or horizontally- or vertically-lined. The notebook gallery view enables users to view up to nine pages simultaneously.
The Day-Timer Pen Scheduler software’s address book provides a portable solution to storing names, addresses, telephone numbers, fax numbers and notes. Information in the address book can be copied, or moved and used in other sections of the organizer. Data from desktop applications can be easily imported into an address book. New addresses can be exported to a desktop system if needed.
To-do lists, a basic for day-to-day organization, are also improved. A to-do task entered in the notepad can be added to the to-do list with a quick gesture. Users can copy or move items from the notepad to the to-do list easily.
Transcribing items from one place to another is no longer necessary, eliminating the chance of losing details. Users can set priorities; reorder, delete or move tasks; and even add notes to the to-do list. Special check boxes let users keep track of finished and pending tasks.
The Day-Timer Pen Scheduler software supports Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing and the GO PenPoint operating systems. It will be available in the second quarter of 1992 through Slate Corp., value-added resellers and system integrators. Slate’s suggested retail price is $195.
Slate Wednesday also announced SafetyPen Utilities, password security and data backup protection for PenPoint.
