SAN FRANCISCO — March 23, 1998 — AvantGo, Inc., a mobile computing software company, today announced that Palm Computing has licensed Java synchronization technology from AvantGo. Palm Computing will use AvantGo's technology for its newly-announced Conduit Development Kit, Java Edition, for the Palm Computing platform. In addition, AvantGo announced that Palm Computing is also bundling AvantGo Web Client and AvantGo Desktop, software that extends enterprise applications to handheld computers, with the Java toolkit. (See related press release, dated March 23, 3Com Corporation Delivers Java-Based Tools for the Palm Computing Platform.)
The Palm Computing Conduit Development Kit, Java Edition allows application developers to create Java applications that synchronize with applications running on the Palm III connected organizer and other devices based on the Palm Computing platform. In addition, the Java toolkit can be used to exchange data between existing enterprise database applications and Palm Pilot organizers. AvantGo Web Client and AvantGo Desktop, software that extends enterprise applications to the Palm Pilot organizer, is bundled with the Java toolkit becather, these products allow Web developers to build and deploy HTML-based intranet applications for Palm Computing platform handheld devices.
Java Conduit Extends Synchronization to Custom Applications
Java technology can be used to develop a variety of enterprise applications. For example, using the Conduit Development Kit, Java Edition, application developers can create custom workflow systems that synchronize shared project schedules with individual Palm Pilot organizer calendars. In addition, software vendors can use the developer kit to easily extend the capabilities of enterprise applications such as resource planning and field automation systems to Palm Computing handheld devices. Many software vendors provide "conduits" or desktop links that enable one-button, two-way data exchange between Palm Computing platform organizers and PC-based software.
However, the newly-available Conduit Development Kit, Java Edition, gives application developers the option to create conduits using Java, greatly easing the synchronization of information between applications on the PalmPilot organizer and the rapidly growing number of enterprise applications written in Java. "AvantGo's technology is an ideal complement to the Palm Computing platform. With the support of Java developers, we expect to see more corporations take advantage of our products as mission-critical remote data access solutions for their mobile workforces," said Ed Colligan, vice president of marketing for Palm Computing, a 3Com company.
"The Java SDK is an important addition to the solutions we offer today for the C and C++ environments, and opens up a lot of opportunity for developers of handheld business solutions." "With our AvantGo Web Client and AvantGo Desktop software, we are extending the reach of corporate intranets and the Web to handheld devices. This Java technology takes our mission one step further, enabling corporate developers to have a broader selection of tools with which they can build mobile applications," said Felix Lin, CEO of AvantGo, Inc. "We are pleased that Palm Computing has chosen to make our Java technology available to Palm Computing platform developers."
