Fujitsu Personal Systems First to Market with 32-Bit Pen Solution
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — September 14, 1998 — Fujitsu Collaborates with Communication Intelligence Corporation In Development of 32-bit Pen Support
Fujitsu Personal Systems, Inc. (FPSI), the market leader in Windows pen tablet computers, today announced it is the first manufacturer to offer pen tablets with 32-bit pen support. FPSI collaborated with Communication Intelligence Corporation (CIC) to develop PenX(tm)1.5, a 32-bit pen extension designed for use with Windows 95, 98 and Windows NT 4.0 operating systems. CIC announced it has begun offering PenX 1.5 in a separate statement released today. PenX is now shipping with FPSI's Stylistic 1200(R), the industry's first pen computer to support Windows NT. "By being the first pen computer vendor to bring 32-bit pen support to the market, Fujitsu continues to lead the way and define new standards for the pen computing industry," stated Geoff Walker, vice president of marketing for Fujitsu Personal Systems.
"This new pen extension helps vertical software developers and resellers in two ways. First, it preserves their 16-bit applications investment by allowing easy 32-bit migration, and second, it enables them to create powerful new pen-based enterprise applications. "Mobile workers rely on Fujitsu pen tablets for decision support in industries as diverse as insurance, healthcare, sales force automation and utilities," continued Walker. "We can now provide customers with a single standard for 32-bit pen support that's consistent from Windows 95 to 98 to NT, while enabling them to move mission-critical pen applications to Windows NT." Mike Sullivan, vice president of OEM sales for CIC said, "CIC and Fujitsu Personal Systems have worked closely together for more than five years.
The combination of Fujitsu's pen tablet computers and CIC's pen computing software solutions creates a truly robust platform for vertical application developers." PenX 1.5 supports pen input in off-the-shelf applications such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Excel. More importantly, it enables the vast majority of pen developers who work with tools such as Visual Basic and Visual C++ to now employ 32-bit ActiveX pen edit controls, replacing the old 16-bit de facto standard. "Now that PenX allows pen application developers to use the latest 32-bit versions of advanced software development tools, we expect to see a dramatic expansion in the number of powerful, mission-critical applications being developed for Windows pen tablets," commented Sullivan.
