Motorola Acquires Handwriting Recognition Software Company
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — November 11, 1993 — Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced today that it has acquired Lexicus Corp., a privately held developer of handwriting recognition software for pen-based computers. Lexicus, based in Palo Alto, Calif., will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Motorola, Inc. and part of the company's Paging and Wireless Data Group.
Founded in 1992 by Ronjon Nag and Chris Kortge, Lexicus is the developer of Longhand(TM), a handwriting recognition product which began shipping this fall. Longhand is second-generation pen-based software that can recognize print, cursive or a combination of both. The product is currently available for PenPoint(TM) and Windows(TM), pen-based operating systems. Lexicus is developing versions of its software for other hand-held platforms.
"Wireless communications and accurate handwriting recognition software are essential for the success of a new class of hand-held computing and communicating products now coming to market," said Bob Growney, Motorola's executive vice president and general manager of the Paging and Wireless Data Group. "Lexicus is a very welcome addition to our Group, and its Longhand software will play a key role in our personal communicator products program," he added.
