NetCradle Enables Wireless PC Card Connectivity for 3Com Connected Organizers
DALLAS — November 3, 1998 — JP Systems Inc., a leading global software and systems developer, today unveiled NetCradle(TM), the world's first multi-network cradle for users of 3Com(R) connected organizers. With NetCradle, an assortment of laptop PC Cards now can share their wireless connectivity features with PalmPilot(TM) and Palm III(TM) connected organizers and the IBM Workpad PC Companion. Users simply snap the Palm(TM) organizer into the four-ounce, ergonomically-designed NetCradle and insert a Type II laptop PC Card (e.g., Motorola Personal Messenger(TM) 100D, Tellus Monarch or RIM Wireless) in the PC Card slot of NetCradle.
Palm Compting(R) device users then can wirelessly browse the Internet, send faxes, and access and update their corporate databases and intranets. Users also can upload and respond to their Internet E-mail messages with software packages, such as One-Touch Communicator(TM). The most commonly-used wireless data networks in the United States and worldwide — DataTAC(R), CDPD (cellular digital packet data) and Mobitex — are accessed by NetCradle at speeds up to 19.2 kbps. "A key role in our development strategy was designing NetCradle to access multiple networks from Palm devices," said Dayakar Puskoor, JP Systems' chief executive officer. This product allows mobile professionals either to select the network coverage of their choice or retain the network service they already have adopted through their existing PC Cards.
"Sales force automation groups with territories scattered across the nation should see improved field productivity with NetCradle's portable and convenient access to product and pricing information on their corporate data systems," added Puskoor. Independent software developers and systems integrators also can develop customized software applications for Palm devices using NetCradle. "With the growing demand for cost-efficient, portable information, NetCradle offers a creative solution that bridges existing technologies in the Palm connected organizers and laptop PC Cards," said Mark Bercow, vice president of strategic alliances and platform development for Palm Computing Inc., a 3Com company. In addition to retrieving and replying to E-mail messages while away from the office, more Palm users now can easily access the Web for stock quotes or travel directions while on the road, he said.
The product will ship in the first quarter of 1999 at a suggested retail price of $ 120.00. Pre-shipment orders can be placed through JP Systems at www.jpsystems.com or 972/484-5432. Users may also order NetCradle and initiate monthly service accounts for wireless networks, including CDPD and Mobitex, through GoAmerica Communications Corp., a leading provider of wireless services, at www.goamerica.net or 888/462-4600. A fully-operational beta version of NetCradle will be shown at JP Systems' booth (no. 6040) in the Palm Computing pavilion (north hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center) at the COMDEX show November 16-20, 1998.
