RedHerring.com’s ‘Live Q&A’ to Feature Handspring Founder Jeff Hawkins

SAN FRANCISCO — August 21, 2000 — The booming use and future of handheld computing devices will be placed before a worldwide interactive audience as RedHerring.com presents a "Live Q&A" featuring Jeff Hawkins, co- founder of Palm Computing and founder of Handspring (Nasdaq: HAND), the leading provider of handheld computing devices. The real-time event will be held Tuesday, August 22, at 1:00 p.m. PDT at http://www.redherring.com/discussions/qa.

The Web chat, moderated by RedHerring.com Technology Editor Paul Kaputska, is the fifth in a new series of Q&A sessions that enables users to "attend" and participate in the virtual event in real time. In the August 22 dialogue, online users can ask questions of Hawkins, who was selected as one of the Top Ten Entrepreneurs of 1999 by Red Herring magazine.

With his background as co-founder of Palm Computing, creator of the widely used PalmPilot, and vision of the modern PDA at Handspring, Hawkins will provide insight into the future of the handheld computing device in the new economy. The online audience will have a chance to discuss the history of the handheld, as well as probe into Hawkins opinions of where the handheld and wireless sector will be in the future.

Online chat participants will be able to submit text questions to Hawkins to advance the discussions. "Live Q&A" takes place in a virtual "room" with Hawkins' and Kaputska's images on stage. Visitors' avatars will be "seated" in the room.

"The stature that RedHerring.com has earned as an up-to-the minute source for business-technology news, analysis and investment information enables us to attract 'Live Q&A' guests who are leaders and trend setters in their fields," said Millikin.

"In the months ahead, we will be offering other high- caliber guests who can provide valuable insights to participants."

Hawkins started his career in technology at Cornell University, where he earned a B.S. in electrical engineering. He held technical positions with Intel Corporation before joining GRiD Systems Corporation. There, Hawkins served as vice president of research where he was the principle designer for the GRiDPad and GRiD Convertible. Even then, in the 1980s, Jeff Hawkins had a vision for a handheld computing device. He currently holds nine patents for different features and devices on the handheld computer. In 1994, Hawkins co- founded Palm Computing where he invented the original PalmPilot device. In July 1998, Hawkins co-founded Handspring with, fellow Palm Computing colleague Donna Dubinsky. The Handspring Visor Deluxe has now become the top selling handheld computing device in the market, beating out competitors such as Compaq and Palm, holding 25 percent of all personal digital assistants (PDA) sold in retail stores.
