The Windward Group Leads Third Party Development Effort for U.S. Robotics Pilot

LOS GATOS, Calif. — January 29, 1996 — The Windward Group, a software development services firm headquartered in Los Gatos, California, has announced its role in developing a breakthrough technology for Palm Computing's Pilot, the first handheld electronic organizer that offers one-touch synchronization with a desktop personal computer.

Windward assisted Palm Computing, a division of U.S. Robotics, in the development of the "conduit" technology that is vital for desktop PC and handheld device applications to function together seamlessly. The applications that are running on the desktop are synchronized and consistent with those running on the handheld device. "Windward provides independent software vendors with a fast, cost-effective way to deliver software solutions for the Palm OS platform," said Donna Dubinsky, V.P. and General Manager of the Palm Computing Division of U.S. Robotics. "We have worked closely with The Windward Group in developing the Palm OS platform. Their familiarity and expertise has enabled them to develop software for a number of our key ISVs, and make that software available when Pilot ships in March."

Windward's team of experts works closely with third party developers to create custom viewer-rich applications for handheld devices like the Pilot. "As the market for handheld devices expands, desktop application developers need to create a tighter coupling between their applications and those on the Pilot," said Doug Engfer, president of The Windward Group. "Likewise, developers of Pilot applications need to synchronize their data with applications on the desktop side. Windward is ready to help these developers by providing experienced personnel who are ready to apply their expertise in handheld computing development."

Windward has a history of working with Palm and its corporate predecessors, including GRiD Systems. For example, Windward worked closely with the San Jose Police Department to develop one of the first penbased field automation systems for law enforcement. Windward is currently working with a number of Palm Computing's corporate partners to develop Pilot conduits and viewer applications. The Windward Group provides software research and development, software quality assurance, and documentation services to computer product firms and corporate clients with mission-critical computer applications.

Pilot will be available in March of 1996. For more [email protected], or visit their web site at www.usr.com/palm.
