US WEST Dex Selected by Palm Computing to Provide Internet Yellow Pages Services to the 3Com Palm VII Connected Organizer
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — December 2, 1998 — The US WEST Dex Internet Yellow Pages, a leading regional provider of nationwide business listings information, today announced it will deliver its Internet yellow pages content wirelessly to users of the Palm VII(TM) connected organizer. The Palm VII organizer is the first all-in-one wirelessly connected handheld computing product of its kind, from Palm Computing(R), Inc., a 3Com company.
The new Palm VII connected organizer, announced today at the Palm Computing Platform Worldwide Developer Conference, will provide fast, secure and easy out-of-the-box access to personal, business and Internet information as well as a means of instant two-way personal communications. The product will enable users to quickly and easily obtain important information from various Web sites remotely via a wireless connection to the Internet. Access to the US WEST Dex Internet Yellow Pages is built into the Palm VII organizer. With a mobile connectivity to the US WEST Dex Internet Yellow Pages web site, http://uswestdex.com, Palm VII device users will have convenient access to information on more than 18 million nationwide business listings in more than 4,500 categories.

The US WEST Dex Internet Yellow Pages delivers to users fast nationwide business listings information, including phone number, address and a map showing the location of the business. US WEST Dex Internet Yellow Pages enhanced services for the Palm VII, including a proximity search to locate businesses within one, two, five or 10 miles of an address, the ability to link to a business's web site or to e-mail businesses, are under development.
The Palm VII connected organizer is the first handheld solution for out- of-the-box wireless communications and Internet access. In addition to providing fast and simple access to personal and business information, the Palm VII organizer enables users to quickly, easily and securely obtain information from Web sites via a wireless connection to the Internet and provides a means of instant two-way personal communications. The Palm VII organizer enters a national field trial in January 1999, and is expected to be widely available in the United States next year.
With the Palm VII organizer, 3Com also introduces a revolutionary new model for accessing Internet information, called web clipping. Web clipping is a means of extracting a specific set of needed information from a given Web site, by requesting certain types of information via special query forms that reside on the Palm VII device. Information received from the Internet by a Palm VII user is automatically optimized for viewing on the Palm VII screen.
